Gaza
Xai-Xai
The next city to the north is Xai-Xai, the capital of Gaza province.
It has a sleepy, provincial feel to it but is a bustling commercial centre
with shops, hotels and a good market. Tourism facilities are concentrated
around the beach, which is located 10km outside town.

QUISSICO
The next town after Xai-Xai, the road just outside Quissico has
a well-known view point which overlooks a chain of magnificent lagoons.
These beaches can be reached with 4WD by taking the right hand turn just
outside the town. The road runs between the two largest lagoons and you
should reach the sea after approximately 11km. There are no facilities
on the beach or lakes. The town itself has a reliable fuel supply.
ZÁVORA
The turn off for Praia da Závora is approximately 196km after
the town of Xai-Xai. The road to the beach is maintained, but it is a
good idea to check conditions in advance. The bay is sheltered and calm,
ideal for snorkelling, and there is good quality accommodation available
at the beach camp.

Continuing on the road to Inhambane, at approximately 244km from Xai-Xai,
you will come across the Inhambane/Maxixe fork. Keep right for Inhambane.
You will see a road leading off to the right at approximately 265km. This
road leads to Paindane and Baía dos Cocos. About 11km down this dirt road
is another fork at which you should take the right one for Paindane (24km)
and the left for Baía dos Cocos. You will need a 4WD vehicle to reach
either of these beaches but it is well worth the effort for these beaches
are pristine and beautifully located. Paindane has well-developed facilities
for tourists and the snorkelling and scuba diving are amongst the best
in Mozambique. The beach is sheltered and secluded and it is a relaxing
and comfortable resort. Baía dos Cocos has basic camping facilities but
is also a lovely beach for swimming. Near to Paindane is Guinjata Bay,
which is ideal for those who take their fishing and diving seriously.
This resort has good camping facilities and there are plans to build private
chalets, each with a view of the bay.
