Manica Province

Chimoio is the capital of Manica province with a population of approximately 80,000 people. The fertile, agricultural districts around the city produce much of the fresh fruit and vegetables for the surrounding area. The city is organised and well-maintained and there are a number of pleasant restaurants and opportunities to ramble at leisure. As you enter Chimoio along the EN6 from Beira, you will notice the Textafrica workers compound in Soalpo. The beginning of the complex is marked by the Catholic church on the left, where there is a road leading into the rest of the compound. Inside are the old school and kindergarten and even the remains of the small zoo, which now has only a couple of ostriches. This was once a major textile factory and efforts are being made to re-establish the productivity of the factory once more, under new ownership.

Manica

Manica is a small, quiet town in a predominantly agricultural area. If you fancy a walk in the hills, a trip to the cave paintings outside the town might be of interest. The track is 4km outside the town on the EN6 towards Machipanda. You can drive most of the way up. You should ask the Regulo if you may walk across the land and you will be escorted up the hill. There are a few paintings about which very little information was available, however the view is magnificent.
