Things to do in the city

Home

Famous for its broad, leafy avenues, Maputo will linger in your mind as one of the most beautiful cities in Africa. Visitors to the city often comment on the relaxed pace and friendly atmosphere of the city and with the many pavement cafés dotted throughout the streets, there is always the opportunity to enjoy a reviving cup of coffee and watch the world go by.

Maputo is a planned city, designed in grid format during the Portuguese colonial times and for the first time visitor to Maputo, this makes a ramble around town a little bit simpler.

We have divided this section into four areas:

The Baixa, the downtown area, which is home to many shops, banks and businesses,
Bairro Polana and Museu, where some of the museums, restaurants and hotels are found,
Along the Marginal, which leads out along the coast to the Costa Do Sol, and
Around the city, which covers sights and things to do further away from the city centre and in the suburbs.

The Time Out map of the city is included in the magazine and contains a key to the grid references given for each of the features listed in the following section. As with any big city, it is advisable not to carry an expensive camera or bag as petty theft is common. From no. 16 onwards, we recommend that you take a car.
