PONTAS DO OURO & MALONGANE

Approximately 117km to the south are the resorts of Ponta do Ouro and Ponta Malongane. Although the distance from Maputo is short, a four-wheel drive vehicle is essential as the road condition is poor and deteriorates further during the rainy season. Travellers have the choice of driving to Boane and taking the road south from there or crossing on the Catembe ferry from Maputo and joining the road from Boane about 20km from the dock. There are no signposts along the route and motorists should beware of driving off-road as there are landmines present in this region. The journey to Ponta do Ouro passes through the Maputo Elephant Reserve, which once had abundant herds of antelope and elephants. There are signs that wildlife is once again moving back into the reserve and gradually the herds are being re-stocked. The scenery there is beautiful nonetheless and it is a bird-watchers' haven. Msala bush camp has basic full-board accomodation for eight people. Approximately 10km before you reach Ponta do Ouro is the resort of Ponta Malongane which caters mostly for divers. Ponta do Ouro is famous for its clean, sandy beaches and the wealth of marine life there, which attracts diving enthusiasts from all over the world.

Campers are well catered for and the campsites are clean with good facilities. The Motel do Mar has been completely renovated and offers excellent facilities to visitors. Owing to the high numbers of South African visitors, the South African Rand is accepted in many resorts around the area. Visitors with small children should beware of the traffic on the beach - at certain times dive boats are launched or landed at one end of the beach, sometimes at high speed. Occasionally, there are blue-bottle jellyfish which can inflict a nasty sting on the unwary.
