South of Maputo
INHACA AND THE ISLANDS
This
is a popular daytrip and weekend break for residents of Maputo, many of
whom avail themselves of the special package trips offered by Pestana
Hotels and Resorts. The flight takes 15 minutes from Maputo airport or
you can organise a boat trip through one of the many companies who offer
this service. Facilities for tourists are well-established. The island
of Inhaca is about 35kms from Maputo and from there it is possible to
visit nearby Portuguese Island, Xefina and Santa Maria point. The reefs
around the islands are the most southerly in Africa and dive and snorkel
enthusiasts will find plenty to do and see there. A large part of Inhaca
has been designated a wildlife protection area and the island has been
a centre of scientific research for many years. The university marine
research station and museum, south of Inhaca village, offers clean, basic
accomodation. The wildlife in the area includes such species as loggerhead
turtles and birds such as hammerkops, pelicans and
flamingoes. There are many companies offering boat charter and excursions
from Maputo, only a few of which are listed here. They can organise the
trip to suit your preferences and some will include diving or snorkelling
equipment on board.
